DELHI GOVERNMENT TO EXEMPT ROAD TAX ON ELECTRIC VEHICLES

India is ready to see the electric vehicles running on its roads with the onset of the manufacturing unit of carmaker Tesla in Karnataka as announced by the chief minister of Karnataka BS Yediyurappa. Though the public opinion on the usage of electric vehicles varies, government decision-makers are also facing policy issues. 

In between all this, the government of Delhi is seeking public suggestions on the exemption of registration fees for battery-operated cars while they already have exempted road tax on electric vehicles under Electric Vehicles Policy.

 The transport minister of Delhi, Kailash Gahlot announced the road tax waiver with immediate effect. The chief minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal mentioned this tax exemption as a step towards pollution-free Delhi by encouraging electric vehicles. He even wrote on his Twitter account “The incentive-based policy encourage large scale adoption of electric vehicles and bring us closer to fulfilling our dream of making Delhi the EV Capital of India.”

The Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2020 was announced in August 2020 which suggests road tax and registration fee of electric vehicle will be waived off and an incentive of Rs.1.5 lakh will be provided for new cars. The policy is designed to enhance and promote the usage of electric vehicles in Delhi by providing incentives.

Road tax is already waived off and the government is working upon the exemption of registration fee for electric vehicles as they have called objections and suggestions from the public for the same that should be addressed to the Secretary-cum-Commissioner of Transport.
