FRONT SEAT AIRBAGS MADE MANDATORY FOR CARS IN INDIA
The central government of India has made airbags mandatory for front seats in all the cars of the country. Issuing the order on Friday (March 5), the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said, “The Ministry has issued a Gazette notification regarding mandatory provision of an airbag for passengers seated on the front seat of a vehicle, next to the driving force. This has been mandated as a crucial feature and is additionally supported suggestions of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety”. The Ministry has mandated the same for all vehicles manufactured on and after April 1, 2021. It is mandatory to get airbags fitted in the front seats for all the new and existing models latest by August 31, 2021.
Earlier too, on December 29, 2020, the Ministry had proposed the use of airbags from April 1, 2021, for new models, and from June 1, 2021, for existing vehicles. In July 2019 the Ministry had put out a draft notification for public consultation proposing the need of airbags on the driver’s side of a vehicle. The latest mandate applies to all the existing models within the M1 class having no more than eight seats additionally to the driver’s seat. All upcoming car models should have the feature of airbags for both the front seats as per the mandate.
According to a recent report of the World Bank, India accounts for 10% of all road crash victims in the world. The front seat passenger is at the higher side of risk in case of any accidental situations, airbags in front will increase the safety levels by reducing the intensity of the possible impact of an accident.
